Getting Started

If you decide to visit the Island of Hawaii there are many ways you can support and experience sustainable tourism here.

Educate Yourself: The more you know about Hawaii, the more your visit will enhance sustainable tourism efforts on the island of Hawaii.

How? Well, first continue doing what you are doing before you come to Hawaii: educate yourself. Educated travelers will have a more rewarding experience. This is especially true as applied to Hawaii. Yes, Hawaii is one of the United States, but very unlike the other 49 states. Coming here with some understanding of the history, culture, environment, people and customs of the Aloha State will truly enhance your stay.

There are plenty of good resources to help you do that – and you don’t have to look far. These magic islands are one of the most written-about destinations on the planet. A good place to start is with the extensive information found right here on the Big Island Visitors Bureau website and then just go from there. Buy a travel guide at your local bookstore. Talk to friends and family who have visited. Read books about Hawaii, and so on.

The second important thing to do is actively embrace the American Society of Travel Agents “Ten Commandments” of sustainable tourism. These, of course, are good for Hawaii or anywhere you may be traveling in the world.
